NEW YORK STATE CREDIT CARD RISK PATIENT NOTIFICATION
Effective October 20, 2024, New York State Law requires providers to notify patients of the risks of using regular credit cards to pay for medical services as a use of credit card, forgoes state and federal protections for medical debt.
Each time you pay for a bill with a credit card, we need you to acknowledge these risks:
- Medical bills paid by a credit card are no longer considered medical debt.
- By paying with a credit card, patients are forgoing federal and state protections around medical debt. In other words, the medical debt is transformed into standard credit card debt.
- By paying with a credit card, you understand that there are no longer protections including wage garnishment and property liens, reporting of medical debt to credit bureaus and limitations on interest rates.
